Horse Colic

The Magic Is in The Frequency and the Quantity

The Quantity

Most psyllium husk products on the market are fed as a supplement; a small scoop daily in the feed. Consider this. A small scoop of psyllium husk is a therapeutic dose for humans (Metamucil). Shouldn't it take a larger dose to be effective for a full-sized horse with more than 70 feet of intestine? The volume must be great enough to suspend and remove intestinal junk to help avoid equine colic. Yet most psyllium products recommend a small scoop daily.

Strict scientific research and extensive anecdotal data have shown that progressively higher doses in a five-day period facilitate the maximum cleansing of the horse’s gut in helping avoid colic in horses.

The dosage described would be:

  • Day 1 - 1 lb
  • Day 2 - 2 lbs
  • Day 3 - 3 lbs
  • Day 4 - 4 lbs
  • Day 5 - 5 lbs

These recommended dosage rates are substantially higher than all psyllium products on the market, except one, ColiClenz™ Plus.

The Frequency

To be effective, these three rules apply:

  • Psyllium husk SHOULD NOT be fed as a supplement.
  • It MUST be fed in sufficient quantities.
  • It SHOULD NOT be fed continuously

Most psyllium husk products are fed incorrectly. If the psyllium seed husk is fed continuously, in small amounts and is less effective in helping avoid horse colic, research indicates the horse adapts to it as if it were a feed. The psyllium seed husk is absorbed into the system and negates any therapeutic value such a small dose might have.

The proven interval between dosages for maximum effectiveness is 5 days every 10 weeks. It is recommended that ColiClenz™ Plus be administered to the horse every 10 weeks, per bag instructions.

ColiClenz™ Plus

  • Must use enough psyllium seed husk to be effective in helping avoid equine colic
  • Progressively higher rations over a five day period achieve maximum cleansing and avoiding colic in horses
  • Only C2+ recommends an increasing ration over a 5 day period
  • When psyllium is fed continuously, the horse’s GI system treats it as a feed, and absorbs it
  • Absorption negates any therapeutic value of the psyllium seed husk and its use in avoiding horse colic
  • Proven effective interval is every 10 weeks
  • Recommended dosage of C2+ is 5 days every 10 weeks
